VWB Signs CableLabs Two-Way Accord11/29/2005 3:01 AM Eastern
Video Without Boundaries Inc., which builds home-entertainment devices, has an agreement with Cable Television Laboratories Inc. to place OpenCable Application Platform-compliant middleware on its next-generation “MediaREADY” media centers. Those media centers allow consumers to download and view video from the Internet, and the pact means VWB will create two-way interactive digital-cable products.
The deal means that VWB has joined Panasonic Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics America Inc., Digeo Inc. and LG Electronics Inc. in signing the CableCard Host Interface Licensing Agreement (CHILA).
“As the only company with experience in the retail deployment of Linux-based media-center technology to have signed the CHILA agreement to date, VWB is blazing new ground in combining two-way digital-cable service with fully featured media-center capabilities for the retail market,” chief technology officer Terry Glatt said.
In other CableLabs news, SMC Networks Inc. said it received certification for its “EZ Connect” wireless cable-modem gateway for the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 2.0 and CableHome 1.1 protocols.
