Samsung Signs CableLabs Accord

11/30/2005 4:53 AM Eastern

Samsung Electronics America Inc. has signed an agreement with Cable Television Laboratories Inc. to put downloadable conditional-access-system technology in consumer devices, becoming the first consumer-electronics manufacturer to sign such a deal.

CableLabs said downloadable CAS offers a cost-effective and cable-company-agnostic option to connect two-way devices to cable systems. Operators could download and change CAS without changing out set-tops or TVs.

“Samsung's pioneering work with downloadable CAS demonstrates that it is a cost-effective solution for retail, as well as leased set tops. We look forward to continuing to work with Samsung on downloadable CAS and other innovations,” Comcast Cable Communications Inc. executive vice president and chief technology officer David Fellows said.
