ESPN Gets Pebble Power

ESPN is the latest cable programmer to target the really small screen with the launch of a sports scores app for the Pebble smartwatch.

ESPN notes that the 1.0 version of the app comes ahead of the 2014/2015 college gridiron season, and that it will present scores from across all major pro leagues and college conferences, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.

According to  Pebble’s ESPN app page, the new offering can track multiple games at onceand can be configured to vibrate the smartwatch amid game updates and score changes. Users also have the option to pair their Pebble smartwatches with smartphones (iOS and Android).

“The ESPN app for Pebble extends our presence on wearable technology and reflects a belief in product and content mobility,” said Ryan Spoon, ESPN’s SVP of digital product management, in a statement. “Whether it is a watch, a phone or a 65-inch TV, our focus is for ESPN to be there when fans are. This is another great example of that.”

Other programmers are starting to develop and launch apps for wearable devices. Earlier this month, The Weather Channel announced the launch of a Pebble app that providers the wearer with current weather conditions and access to a three-day forecast that is given with a shake of the wrist.

Pebble smartwatches range in price from $150 to $249 and tout a battery life of five to seven days.
