DOCSIS 3.0 Modem Shipments To Grow 14% in 2014D3.0-Powered CPE To Account For 89% Of All Cable CPE Shipments, ABI Predicts 12/13/2013 2:05 PM Eastern
Shipments of DOCSIS 3.0-powered consumer premises equipment are poised to reach 50 million units in 2014, accounting for 89% of all cable CPE shipments, ABI Research predicted in a new report.
In fact, Arris is already there. The vendor, which acquired Motorola Home in April, reported that 89% of the DOCSIS-powered modems and gateways it shipped in the third quarter of 2013 had that distinct 3.0 flavor.
ABI said overall shipments of broadband CPE, a category that includes wired routers, modems and gateways, will surpass 147 million at the end of 2013, and reach 150 million in 2014.
ABI also expects DSL CPE shipments to dip 2% in 2013 as DSL growth continues to struggle. However, VDSL-powered CPE is showing growth, and should account for more than 25% of shipments in the DSL category, the firm said.
"Increasing adoption of fiber-optic broadband services is driving the growth of fiber-optic CPE shipments. Fiber-optic CPE will represent 26% of overall broadband CPE shipped in 2014. Cable and DSL CPE devices will have equal market share of around 37%," said Jake Saunders, ABI VP and practice director, in a statement.
Among vendors, ZTE, with a 13% share, was tops in broadband CPE shipments for the third quarter, followed closely by Arris (12%), which leapt past Huawei (11%).
