Comcast Speed Upgrades Hit Houston, California

Comcast has begun to roll out speed upgrades in Houston and parts of California, according to MSO customers who have been keeping close tabs on the situation this week, and posting speed results via the DSL Reports message board.

Comcast has yet to make any official announcements about the increases, but, by product tier, here’s how the upgrades, which are primarily focused on the downstream, are shaping up:

-“Performance” is rising from 25 Mbps to 50 Mbps

-“Blast” is jumping from 50 Mbps to 105 Mbps

-“Extreme” is rising from 105 mbps to 150 Mbps

The speed boosts in California and Houston, activated by a modem reboot, follow a similar path Comcast took with bundled service customers in its 15-state Central Division back in January.

Comcast also has not announced when it will replicate the speed upgrades taking place in Houston and California in other markets, but Kansas City and Olathe, Kan., which happen to be in Google Fiber territory, are believed to be among the systems that are on deck.

In the upgrade markets, Comcast is jacking up speeds without a price increase. However, some customers might need a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem to get the new speeds, which Comcast will also swap in for no additional cost.
