Verizon Building FTTP Net in N.J.

3/09/2005 9:47 AM Eastern

In a move that will bring more competition to Time Warner Cable and Cablevision, Verizon Communications said construction is under way on a fiber-to-the-premises network in 24 northern New Jersey towns.

Verizon -- which said it will seek cable-franchise agreements to offer video service -- said it is in the midst of expanding its fiber network to several wealthy towns in Bergen, Morris, Monmouth and Burlington counties. The towns include Alpine, Closter, Demarest, Franklin Lakes, Harrington Park, Northvale, Old Tappan, Ramsey, Rockleigh and Wykoff.

Verizon had suspended its FTTP construction one year ago in New Jersey, noting that the regulatory environment in the state wasn’t favorable.
