WAPA Inks Deals, Lands On Basic

New York — Starting mid July, Time Warner Cable’s system here will begin to carry WAPA America, the cable and satellite superstation of Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV, as part of its Hispanic tier, the companies confirmed.

The agreement, whose financial terms were not disclosed, comes on the heels of WAPA’s carriage deal with Bright House Networks, which started carrying the station on its digital tier in Orlando, Fla., in March.

“What we have in Orlando is really groundbreaking, because we are on basic digital, not their Hispanic tier,” said Alan Sokol, senior investment partner at InterMedia, the company that acquired WAPA-TV in 2007. With this deal, WAPA America will reach more than 600,000 Orlando-area subscribers, instead of the 20,000 it would reach through a dedicated Spanish-language tier. Bright House is also expected to launch WAPA America in Tampa.

Mun2 Site Adds Social Networking

New York — Mun2 is relaunching its Web site (holamun2.com) to include more interactive and social networking features for users. The goal, according to the bilingual youth-channel owned by NBC Universal’s Telemundo, is not to compete with MySpace or Facebook but to feed user-generated content back to the network.

With over 270,000 unique visitors each month, the site encourages viewers to upload images, text and video — user-generated content that often ends up on the TV screen. At the end of 2007, for instance, Mun2 collected about 4,200 images and 500 videos from users who responded to a call to action by the host of Pepsi Música, and some of those images and videos were featured on TV.

Fox Scores With Copa Libertadores

Los Angeles — Fox Sports en Español on June 3 scored its highest ratings this year, when nearly 1 million total viewers — adults 18 to 49 and men 18 to 49 — tuned in to watch the semifinal match between LDU of Quito, Ecuador, and Mexico’s club América, the network said.

The live telecast delivered more viewers for FSE than Telemundo and Telefutura among men 18 to 49. The match was part of its successful Copa Santander Libertadores tournament coverage. Its final is set for June 25.
