Com21 Inc. is expanding its product family to offer a soup-to-nuts Data Over
Cable System Interface Specification cable-modem system.
Dubbed 'DOXcontroller XB' -- with the XB standing for extreme bandwidth --
Com21's revamped cable-gear lineup is DOCSIS 1.0- and DOCSIS 1.1-compliant with
added advanced-physical-layer TDMA (time-division multiple-access)
The result is a system that can run DOCSIS networks with virtual local-area
networks, quality of service, optimized scheduling and spectrum-analysis
applications, according to the company.
It also signals a renewed push into the North American cable market for
Milpitas, Calif.-based Com21, which focused most of 2001 on the European and
Asian cable markets.
The DOXcontroller XB System includes a one-rack headend controller and an
updated network-management provisioning system that supports DOCSIS systems.
Its advanced TDMA technology -- which, along with S-CDMA (synchronized
code-division multiple-access), are part of Cable Television Laboratories Inc.'s
DOCSIS 2.0 specification -- can offer boosted upstream capacity and symmetrical
Com21 plans to start DOXcontroller customer trials in the spring, with volume
customer shipments in the third quarter of 2002.
