Nielsen Task Force Adds ‘Sulu,’ Three More

7/06/2004 5:50 AM Eastern

Actor George Takei, a featured player in the original Star Trek series, is one of four new members appointed to a task force studying Nielsen Media Research’s measurement of minority TV audiences.

In addition to Takei, the other appointees joining the current 11 task-force members are: Karen Watson, EchoStar Communications Corp.’s vice president of government relations; Mario Baeza, chairman of The Baeza Group, a Latino-owned investment firm, and TCW/Latin American Partners, a Latin-American private-equity firm in partnership with Trust Co. of the West; and Daniel Villanueva, managing partner of Bastion Capital Corp.

Takei -- who played chief navigator Hikaru Sulu on the Enterprise in Star Trek -- now serves on the board of East West Players in Los Angeles, a noted Asian Pacific-American theater.

The task force, which will have its first meeting early this month, is chaired by former U.S. Rep. Cardiss Collins.

The task force was created after an uproar from broadcasters like News Corp. and African-American and Hispanic groups erupted over Nielsen launching “Local People Meters” in New York. Los Angeles is slated for this Thursday, with Chicago to follow.
