RGB Adds Live SDI Video Encoding To 'TV Everywhere' Lineup

Video encoding vendor RGB Networks has upgraded its TransAct Transcoder product to handle uncompressed SDI-sourced live content in addition to on-demand file-based video, for delivery of "TV Everywhere" services to smartphones, tablets, PCs, connected TVs and traditional set-top boxes.

The product -- which the vendor has renamed TransAct Encoder/Transcoder -- provides various input and output options, including: SDI input and output for live video; packaged formats such as Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS), MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG DASH) or RTMP; and mezzanine format for just-in-time packaging. The system provides up to four HD-SDI inputs per one rack unit platform.

The new product "opens up new opportunities for video service providers to develop compelling live and on-demand services, which increase both subscriber retention and revenue generation, and ultimately ease their transition to a monetized, multi-device video environment," said Nabil Kanaan, RGB senior director of product marketing.

Other products in RGB's Enhanced Video Intelligence Architecture (eVIA) family include the Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) with real-time transcoding capabilities and the TransAct Packager, which includes a "just-in-time" ability to package video streams for major IP streaming protocols.

RGB plans to demo the TransAct Encoder/Transcoder and other solutions at IBC2012, Sept. 7-11 in Amsterdam.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based RGB says its products are deployed by more than 400 cable, telco, satellite, over-the-top and mobile operators in 30 countries. Investors include Accel Partners, Comcast, Focus Ventures, Granite Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and Mitsui & Co. Venture Partners.
