2012 Olympics: Video Subs Authenticate 9.9M Devices for London 'TV Everywhere' Presentations

Aided by video subscribers who authenticated nearly 10 million devices, NBCOlympics.com established a host of digital records with the London Games.
Cable, satellite and telco video customers verified 9.9 million devices either on NBCOlympics.com or on the NBC Olympics Live Extra app, a total that NBCU officials believe is the highest level of authentication for any "TV Everywhere" event. There are approximately 100 million pay-television homes in the U.S.
For the first time ever, NBC Olympics.com live-streamed every competition, as well as the closing ceremony, for a total of 3,500 programming hours, including the awarding of all 302 medals. In addition, NBC Olympics provided two new apps for the 2012 London Olympics. The NBC Olympics Live Extra app live streamed every athletic competition and provided multiple concurrent streams for select sports, such as gymnastics (each apparatus), track and field (each event), and tennis (up to five courts), while NBC Olympics app served as the home for everything else Olympics, including short-form highlights, event schedules, TV and online listings, results, athlete profiles, columns and the new primetime companion feature.
The upshot: There were 159.3 million video streams from London, compared with 75.5 million from the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and 20.4 million hours of streamed video, again more than double the 9.9 million from the prior Summer Games, according to Omniture data.
Of that total, there were 64.4 million live streams, 353% more than Beijing's 14 million, with more than 13.6 million live hours. That represented a 340% jump from the 4 million during the Beijing quadrennium, according to NBCU officials. Users averaged 111.4 live streaming minutes per viewer on the web and 94.3 live streaming minutes per viewer on the app.
All told, the NBC Olympics Live Extra and NBC Olympics Apps were downloaded more than 8 million times, with the former believed to be the most downloaded "event- specific" App in Apple store history . Some 63% of live streams were viewed on the web, while the balance came via the Live Extra App. Seventy percent of the total video streams were viewed on the web, 30% on the two Apps
As for the number of unique users, there were 57.1 million on the web for the London Games, up for 51.8 million for Beijing, while NBCOlympics.com mobile website had 10.1 million versus 6.5 million four years ago. For their parts, the Live Extra and NBC Olympics apps garnered 11.2 million and 3.7 million unique users, respectively.
Overall, there were 1.9 billion page views across NBCOlympics.com on computer, mobile and tablet, and both apps, 650 million more than Beijing's 1.25 billion, according to Omniture. Users spendt an average of 30 minutes per visit to NBCOlympics.com, up from 12.3 minutes during Beijing.
