FCC Vet Mago Heads to NAB

8/31/2004 4:50 AM Eastern

Federal Communications Commission veteran Jane Mago has been hired by the National Association of Broadcasters as general counsel. She will replace Jack Goodman, who is leaving the NAB for an undisclosed position.

Mago, who started at the FCC in 1978, has held numerous high positions at the agency, most recently as chief of the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis.

Mago, who joins the NAB on Oct. 4., will report directly to executive vice president of legal and regulatory affairs Marsha MacBride. Both MacBride and Mago were close advisers of FCC chairman Michael Powell.

“If a government agency can be said to have a soul, Jane Mago is a part of the commission’s. She will be missed by all of us as a colleague, confidante, and friend. We wish her well,” Powell said in a statement Wednesday.

In 1978, Mago received her law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she also received her B.A. and M.A. in communications. Mago is a member of the New York State Bar and Federal Communications Bar Association.

Mago’s move to the NAB evidently led to Goodman’s departure. He joined the trade group in 1990 and became general counsel in 1998.

“Jack has made significant contributions on issues including must-carry and retransmission-consent rights, ownership reform, approval for digital radio and television and the end of the Fairness Doctrine. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” NAB president Edward Fritts said in a statement Wednesday.

Mago is joining the NAB as TV stations are face a number of regulatory challenges, highlighted by an FCC staff plan that would force TV stations to surrender their analog licenses on Dec. 31, 2008.
