TWC Lights Up App for Samsung Smart TVsInitial Version of Provides Access to More than 5,000 VOD Titles Without a Set-Top 7/31/2013 6:08 AM Eastern
Time Warner Cable has launched a version of its authenticated TWC TV app for Samsung Smart TVs that will initially deliver upwards of 5,000 VOD TV shows and movies from more than 94 providers without the need for a separate set-top box.
TWC revealed many of those details June at The Cable Show in June, noting at the time that the MSO plans to add live TV streaming capabilities to its Samsung app by the end of 2013. TWC’s app is available on 2012 and 2013 Samsung Smart TV models to customers who subscribe the MSO's Standard (Expanded Basic) level or higher video service tier. Users can also download the app from the “video” category in the Samsung App store, and launch it by clicking on the Smart Hub button on their remote control.
"We're excited to give customers this big screen experience as the fifth major platform we launch TWC TV," said Mike Angus, TWC’s SVP and GM, video in of video, in a statement. "It's a great addition to any spare room in the home without a set top box."
The MSO has also launched the TWC TV app on Apple iOS and Android devices, on the Roku, and on PCs and Macs (via the TWCTV.com Web site). Thanks to a “landmark deal” signed with Microsoft, TWC is also closing in on the launch of an app for the Xbox 360 that will initially offer about 300 live TV channels on the gaming platform. TWC has also indicated that it is likewise “eager” to integrate with the Xbox One, Microsoft’s next-gen console.
Bloomberg reported earlier this month that TWC and Apple are nearing a deal to bring the MSO’s app to the Apple TV device.
Outside of the retail ecosystem, TWC is also developing a new cloud-based navigator for its own advanced set-tops and gateways. The MSO is currently trialing it with employees in Syracuse, N.Y., and preparing to expand tests to New York City and Los Angeles ahead of a broad launch in 2014.
