TW Cable Brings Out-Of-Home, Live TV Streaming to Apple Devices

A refresh of Time Warner Cable's app for iOS devices will support out-of-home streaming to a small subset of live TV feeds as well as to more than 1,100 hours of video-on-demand content from 26 networks.

The TWC TV app update, set to become available Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, will for the first time provide out-of-home streaming of up to 11 live TV news, sports and entertainment channels, including Aspire, BBC America, FearNet, TV Guide Network, NY1, NY1 Noticias, YNN and News 14, among others, depending on the market.  On-the-go, authenticated TW Cable customers can tap in via any Wi-Fi network. The latest app will run on the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone and iPod Touch.

According to TW Cable, the latest app also freshens up and improves the user experience of the live TV mini-guide using filtering and sorting features for the 200-plus live TV channels that are available for streaming when users are connected to their home network.  TWC’s in-home streaming package is currently offered on Roku boxes, iOS and Android devices and on PCs and Macs.  TWC got that project off the ground in March 2011, when it offered just 30 basic channels on the Apple iPad.  The launch led to a multi-screen dustup between TW Cable and Viacom, with the programmer demanding that the operator shut down the app over copyright concerns. TWC and Viacom settled in May 2012, resulting in a deal that provided the MSO with rights to offer live TV on tablets, smartphone and PCs in the home.

TW Cable also supports home-spun apps from several programmers that provide access to live TV and/or on-demand content streams whether customers are connecting from home or on the go, including HBO and Cinemax, ESPN, MTV, VH1,  Spike, Comedy Central, BET, Speed2, Pac-12, Fox Business, Fox News, Nickelodeon, and YNN.

"We were the first provider to bring live television to the iPad in the home," said Mike Angus,  TWC’s senior vice president and general manager, video, in a statement.  "Since then, we’ve increased the number of platforms and devices on which our customers can watch live television, and added thousands of hours of Video On Demand programming at no additional cost. The release of this TWC TV update is the next natural step towards our goal of giving customers even more of the content they love on every screen."
