Speed, STATS Team Up on Driver Rankings

4/08/2005 7:11 AM Eastern

Speed Channel and STATS Inc. have developed a formula for weekly driver rankings across all four major auto-racing organizations.

The network and the sports-information and statistical-analysis company will rank all drivers from the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Nextel Cup, Formula One, the Champ Car World Series and the Indy Racing League, beginning Sunday (April 10).

The initial “Speed Channel Driver Rankings” will be posted on the network’s Web site (www.speedtv.com) Wednesday, following the Champ Car World Series season opener in Long Beach, Calif.

“We receive an unbelievable amount of e-mail correspondence loaded with passion for a particular racing series or driver," Speed vice president of business development and operations Kevin Annison said in a prepared statement.

"F1 fans tell us they have little respect for NASCAR drivers,” he added. “NASCAR drivers don't exactly welcome open-wheel transplants onto their tracks with open arms. So we decided to come up with something that shows how the best of the best match up."
