'Sharknado' Devours 1.9 Million Viewers in Encore Performance

July 18 Telecast Leaps 38% over Debut; Movie's Feeding Frenzy to Continue with Additional Airings 7/20/2013 11:49 AM Eastern

The schools of viewers were much larger this time around.

Syfy’s encore telecast of Sharknado on July 18 significantly outperformed the telefilm’s debut the week before among key demos and total viewers.

Sharknado averaged 1.9 million total viewers, 797,000 adults 25 to 54 and 701,000 adults 18 to 49 on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to Nielsen data, respective gains of 38%, 29% and 24% from its July 11 debut.

The telefilm also delivered 313,000 18-to-34 watchers, up 50% from the premiere and the network’s most-watched original movie in that demographic since Zombie Apocalypse in October 2011.

Sharknado, which was Syfy's most social telecast ever, driving 387,000 social mentions around its debut, was the most-tweeted program on cable July 18, excluding sports and special events, according to network officials.

Syfy will encore the original movie, which is spawning a sequel Sharknado 2 (working title) in which flying sharks will attack New York City instead of Los Angeles, again on Saturday, July 27 at 9 p.m. as part of an all-day "Sharkathon" movie festival that will include such classics as Sharktopus, Two-Headed Shark Attack and Swamp Shark.

Sharknado will also air on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., leading into the original movie Ghost Shark, about a great white shark, tortured and killed by a fisherman, who returns as an unfriendly ghost to exact vengeance on the human race. The movie stars Mackenzie Postman and Richard Moll.
