OWN Secures Rights To 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom' FilmOprah Winfrey Network To Debut Golden Globe-Nominated Film In 2017 12/30/2013 2:03 PM Eastern
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has secured the network television rights to Golden Globes-nominated movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, the network announced Monday.
The Weinstein Company-produced movie, starring Idris Elba and based on the life of Nelson Mandela, will air on OWN in its first broadcast window beginning in 2017, said network officials. Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, garnered three Golden Globe nominations, including a best actor nomination for Elba’s portrayal of Mandela.
“We couldn’t be more honored to showcase this powerful film to the OWN viewers,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN. “Nelson Mandela was Oprah’s hero, and ultimately, the inspiration behind Oprah’s school in South Africa. His story of forgiveness and redemption is a gift not only to the people he touched, but to the world.”
