Out-Of-Home Home Upgrades Reach The TiVo StreamMSOs To Receive New Out-Of-Home Option In The ‘Coming Weeks’ 11/07/2013 7:14 PM Eastern
TiVo has begun to release a software update that adds out-of-home streaming capabilities to the TiVo Stream, the standalone transcoding sidecar that can be paired with the TiVo Premiere HD-DVR and the entry level TiVo Roamio box.
“An initial group of boxes were authorized for the update today,” Margaret Schmidt, TiVo’s VP of design and engineering and chief design officer, wrote in this blog post on Wednesday, Nov. 6. “If your TiVo Stream was not in this first batch, it should be updated within a couple of weeks.”
TiVo didn’t say when it expects to complete the upgrade, initially targeted to TiVo Stream products sold at retail, but TiVo’s MSO partners “can elect to begin deploying this latest software update in the coming weeks,” a spokesman said via email. As those rollouts complete, TiVo Streams deployed by each individual operator will have out-of-home capabilities as well, he added.
TiVo added out-of-home streaming capabilities to the TiVo Roamio Pro and Roamio Plus DVRs late last month.
So far, none of TiVo’s U.S. cable partners have announced plans to light up TiVo’s new out-of-home capabilities.
Atlantic Broadband, the first cable operator to deploy TiVo’s T6 platform, the operator-optimized version of the hardware for Tivo’s Roamio Plus, has no near term plans to add out-of-home streaming as it focuses instead on offering authenticated TV Everywhere apps.
