NGC Dives Into Titanic Special4/15/2004 9:06 AM Eastern
Dr. Robert Ballard will find the R.M.S. Titanic again, with help from National Geographic Channel.
One-hour special Return to Titanic will chronicle the return of Ballard, the original finder of the Titanic wreck, to the scene, where he will examine the effects of the “destructive combination of natural forces and human intrusions” that is threatening to force the complete collapse of the wreck into the ocean floor, the network said.
Return to Titanic will air Monday, June 7 at 9 p.m. (EST/PST).
The NGC special will include the first-ever live telecast from the Titanic's watery grave, some 12,000 feet under the Atlantic Ocean, the network added.
"I'm returning to Titanic to see what has happened to the ship in the almost 20 years that have elapsed since I first discovered her," Ballard said in a prepared statement.
"Using high-definition cameras, we will take images of the ship and its surrounding debris field and compare them to the images we made in 1985 and 1986,” he added. “This will allow our team of scientists, and the viewers at home, to contrast the ship's past and present and see the level of change for ourselves.”
