Hallmark Channel Combo Wins Cable's Saturday NightSeries Debut of 'Cedar Cove,' Premiere of Telefilm 'Second Chances' Lifts Net 7/30/2013 4:26 PM Eastern
The series bow of Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove and premiere of original telefilm Second Chances made Hallmark Channel second to none among cable networks with the Nielsens on Saturday night.
The network's initial foray into scripted series, Cedar Cove maintained much of its momentum and audience from the previous week’s movie pilot debut averaging a 2.2 household rating and 2.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen data, making it the top series on cable on July 27. The two-hour movie averaged 2.6 million watchers during its July 20 premiere.
Cedar Cove, starring Andie MacDowell as a judge in a small seaside town, trailed only Hallmark Channel's original movie Second Chances, which scored a 2.5 rating and 2.8 million watchers to make it the medium’s top program of the day.
“We are thrilled that Cedar Cove’s successful two-hour series pilot was followed up by a strong result for the program’s first one-hour episode on July 27,” said Bill Abbott, CEO and president, Crown Media Family Networks, in a statement.“The fact that so many viewers returned on Saturday night for the continuation of the storyline bodes well for the future of this series, as well as other episodic series in development for Hallmark Channel. Additionally, Cedar Cove was an outstanding lead-in for the premiere of Hallmark Channel‘s original movie, Second Chances, which achieved a 2.5 household rating and, combined with Cedar Cove’s performance, made Hallmark Channel the top network in primetime on Saturday night. These results are clear evidence that our strategy to own Saturday nights is paying off on all fronts.”
