Grizzlies Sign with FSN, Ditch RSN Plans11/04/2004 9:21 AM Eastern
In a last-minute deal, FSN reached a carriage agreement with the National Basketball Association’s Memphis Grizzles, effectively ending the team’s effort to launch its own regional sports network.
Atlanta-based FSN South and Dallas-based FSN Southwest will telecast 60 Grizzlies regular-season games, which began with Wednesday night’s Grizzlies-Washington Wizards game.
The game was slated to appear on the team-owned Grizzlies Regional Sports Network, but the team dissolved the channel after reaching the FSN agreement.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The GRSN service had failed to reach distribution deals with the major MSOs in the area, as well as with direct-broadcast satellite services DirecTV Inc. and EchoStar Communications Corp.
“Our objective has always been to provide the most Grizzlies programming to the largest number of fans,” Grizzlies vice president of broadcast Randy Stephens said in a prepared statement.
“We feel that a partnership with FSN will achieve all of our objectives and offer the best possible outcome to deliver more Grizzlies programming to our current fans, while giving us the opportunity to reach new fans,” he added.
