Google Chromecast Ships Pandora to the TV

Pandora Adds ‘Cast’ Button To Its Android and iOS Mobile Apps 10/31/2013 8:03 PM Eastern

Google’s Chromecast streaming adapter and Comcast’s X1 platform now have something new common – they both work with Pandora.

Pandora, the popular Internet radio service, announced Thursday that it has outfitted its Android and iOS mobile apps with a “Cast” button that enables the Chromecast to deliver the popular Internet radio service wirelessly to the TV.

"This launch is particularly exciting for us because it is a testament to the investment we made earlier this year in our tv.pandora.com platform,” Pandora CTO and EVP of product Tom Conrad, wrote in this blog post. “We believe the model of web standards-based apps running on the TV, controlled by a smartphone or tablet, is the winning formula for powering second screen experiences. The framework we built with tv.pandora.com allows us to quickly evolve the ‘10 foot’ experience of Pandora with greater flexibility and speed than ever before.”

Pandora adds to the Chromecast’s small, yet growing content lineup. Earlier this month it added support for Hulu Plus. Google launched the $35 streaming adapter in late July with integrations with YouTube, Netflix, Google Play and the Chrome browser. HBO is exploring a way to bring its TV Everywhere service, HBO Go, to the Chromecast.

Chromecast currently supports Android smartphones and tablets and iPhones, with support for iPads coming soon.

In addition to Comcast’s X1 platform, which is beta testing a Send To TV feature that shares some Chromecast traits, Pandora has also been integrated with a variety of retail devices as well as set-tops from DirecTV, Dish Network and Verizon FiOS TV.
