Food Kicks Off Talent Hunt

10/25/2004 9:08 AM Eastern

Do you want to be “The Next Food Network Star?”

The Scripps Networks-owned service said Monday that it will launch a nationwide talent search, with the eventual winner hosting a six-episode series to debut next September.

The winner’s series will be part of Food’s weekend “In the Kitchen” programming block, which airs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (EST/PST) every Saturday and Sunday, the network said.

Applicants must submit three-minute audition tapes explaining why they should be The Next Food Network Star by Nov. 30.

Food will then narrow down the field and select seven finalists, with the eight finalist being chosen by an online viewer vote (www.foodnetwork.com).

The eight finalists will go to New York in February, where they will be tested in a series of challenges. A panel of judges will again continue to narrow the field down to two, both of whom will film pilot segments. Viewers will then vote and determine the overall winner, Food said.

“So many people say to us, ‘I know the perfect person for your network,’ or, ‘I should have my own show,’” Food senior vice president of primetime programming Kathleen Finch said in a prepared statement.

“We’re giving everyone a chance to become the newest member of our on-air family,” she added. “We’re looking for someone who has a great personality, unique style and a working knowledge of food and cooking.”
