Integration with Rovi Video Gives Social Network Access to Database of Movie, TV and Celebrity Info 4/17/2013 4:53 AM Eastern

Social networking giant Facebook has signed a deal to integrate Rovi Video, a database developed and managed by Rovi Corp. that supplies in-depth info on movies, TV shows and celebrities.

The integration, the companies said, will give developers a high-quality, standardized base of entertainment data for creating consumer apps and pave the way for more social interaction with movies and TV shows. Rovi Video provides data on more than 4.6  million programs, including 2.93 million series episodes.

In turn, Rovi, a company that also supplies interactive program guides and patent licenses to video service providers and vendors, said the metadata-focused deal with Facebook will help it enhance its own social media products by extending its mapping of Rovi IDs to a larger set of Facebook IDs. That, the company added, will make it easier for Rovi’s customers to include links to corresponding movie and TV show Facebook pages in their products.

“Facebook is creating a foundation that will make it easier for third-party app developers to build new services for its platform,” said Bob Shallow, SVP of sales and marketing at Rovi, in a statement.   “We believe that high-quality data is core to enabling consumers to have a deeper connection to entertainment. We have continued to invest in our data to increase its breadth, depth and relevance in order to provide customers like Facebook with the ability to create a more robust user experience.”

Operators, meanwhile, are starting to integrate third-party apps into their next-gen user interfaces. Comcast, for example, has stitched in Facebook and Pandora in X1, a cloud-based UI for IP-capable set-tops that the MSO has rolled out in Colorado, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Augusta, Ga.; and Chattanooga, Tenn.

Facebook says it had more than 1 billion monthly active users  at the end of 2012, and averaged 618 million daily active users in December 2012.
