Dish Sticks GetGlue to ‘Explorer’ App

iPad App for Hopper DVR Adds GetGlue’s Rewards-Based ‘Check-In’ Social TV Platform 8/01/2013 7:29 AM Eastern

Dish Network’s Explorer app for the iPad will get a bit more social following an upgrade that incluces the integration of GetGlue’s reward-based TV “check-in” social TV platform.

GetGlue, which has 4 million registered users and competes with second screen specialists such as Zeebox, Viggle and BuddyTV, said this marks the first time GetGlue has allowed a third party app access to its media feed. However, GetGlue and DirecTV announced a deal in 2011 that paved the way for GetGlue to be natively integrated into the satellite giant’s Social TV App. At the time, GetGlue also said it would enhance its iPhone app for DirecTV customers.

Launched in January, Explorer is a tablet app for Dish’s Hopper HD-DVR that serves as a remote control with baked in recommendation and social networking components.

GetGlue’s feed tracks real-time activity of about 35,000 shows and 50,000 movies and current sporting events, and includes a mix of “official” and viewer-generated content, such as images, comments, videos, recaps and tweets. Check-ins within Explorer can be automatically populated to a user’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

"Dish has proven to be an innovative developer, and is an ideal fit to be the first to integrate our media feeds,” said GetGlue president Evan Krauss, in a release. “Now, Dish subscribers can use GetGlue to share what they are watching and consume curated content from GetGlue show feeds directly within Dish Explorer. This will enhance the Dish Explorer app with official and fan-generated multimedia."

Dish, meanwhile, has been ramping up its efforts to reach out to third parties interested in developing apps for Explorer.  The company announced in June that would open up the application programming interfaces for Explorer on July 15.  Dish is kicking off that effort by working with “trusted parties” and is running the Explorer app certification program.
