Comcast's X1 Rolls into Richmond, Va.

MSO On Track to Deploy Cloud-Based, IP-Capable Video Platform Across Footprint By End of 2013 8/14/2013 7:06 AM Eastern

Comcast has unleashed its X1 platform in Richmond, Va., expanding on earlier deployment in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

With Richmond now in the fold, Comcast has rolled out its IP-capable, next-gen video platform to 28 markets. Comcast has deployed X1 to more than half of its footprint as it moves ahead on a plan to launch it in its remaining markets by the end of 2013.

“With the X1 Platform, we’re keeping our customers at the forefront of innovation, and providing them an entertainment experience unlike any they’ve seen before,” said Tom Coughlin, senior vice president of Comcast’s Beltway Region, in a statement.  “By leveraging IP and cloud-based technology, we have the flexibility to continually bring new enhancements to customers, further integrate our services and ultimately make TV viewing smarter, richer and more personalized.”

X1 features a cloud-based interface, supports third-party apps from Facebook and Pandora, sports and weather widgets, and a voice-controlled search app that’s currently offered on the iPhone. Comcast Labs has also developed a “Send to TV” app that supports some features found in the new Google Chromecast device.  More detail about the MSO's Send to TV app is available here (subscription required).

Comcast, which serves 21.77 million video subs, is marketing X1 to new triple play customers.

X1 currently runs on a hybrid QAM/IP HD-DVR made by Pace, though several other suppliers, including Arris and Humax, are making devices that support the platform. Humax, for example, is one of Comcast’s sources for the Xi3, an all-IP HD client device that will be support X2, an upgrade that will feature a more personalized UI for set-tops, tablets, smartphones and PCs, as well as the MSO’s coming in-home TV streaming and cloud DVR service
