CNN Resets Afternoon Fare

5/11/2005 9:10 AM Eastern

This summer, Cable News Network will totally revamp its afternoon programming, replacing not only Crossfire, but Inside Politics, with a solid three-hour block anchored by Wolf Blitzer, officials said Wednesday.

Starting June 6, CNN will debut the new, not-yet-named program block from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. That block, while hosted by Blitzer, will showcase all of CNN’s talent covering stories such as politics, business, national security, homeland security and world affairs, CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein said in a memo to staff.

That new program block will replace the last half hour of Live From, Inside Politics, Crossfire and Wolf Blitzer Reports.

“These changes help us provide even more compelling programming that will deliver on our journalistic mission,” Klein said in his memo.

CNN had announced back in January that it was canceling Crossfire.

As part of the schedule overhaul, CNN will also start airing a simulcast of CNN International’s Your World Today from noon to 1 p.m. each weekday.

The CNN airing of that show, anchored from Atlanta by Jim Clancy and Zain Verjee, will also kick off June 6. The program will be expanded to include updates on top domestic stories to augment the U.S. channel’s airing.

“We cover international news better than anyone, and we want to show it across the news group,” Klein wrote.

He also noted that the new schedule, as well as changes CNN will make to its broadband offerings, will create additional jobs in both Washington and Atlanta.
