CNN Explains ‘X’ Over Cheney

Cable News Network blamed a “technical malfunction” for the black “X” that obscured Vice President Dick Cheney’s face during its coverage of a speech Monday, AP reported.

The X appeared twice, for a total of one-seventh of a second, the network told AP.

CNN said the X is used by a computer to mark a space where one visual element is set to segue into another, and it is normally not seen by viewers. The network blamed a computer that inexplicably freezes, AP reported.

“We obviously regret that it happened, and we are working on the equipment to ensure that it is not repeated,” CNN said in a prepared statement.
