Beta: Discovery, ESPN Rank as Favorites

Beta Research Corp. released its “Fall 2004 Beta Research Cable Subscriber Evaluation Study” Wednesday.

Among the highlights:

• Favorite basic-cable network, mentioned unaided among top five favorites: Discovery Channel (26%), ESPN (26%), The History Channel (23%), Lifetime Television (16%), Cable News Network (14%), Fox News Channel (14%), Food Network (14%), Home & Garden Television (14%), A&E Network (13%), USA Network (13%) and Turner Network Television (13%). As far as midsized networks, Hallmark Channel led at 6%, followed by Oxygen at 5%.

• Average perceived value: ESPN ($1.20), Discovery ($1.18), History ($1.16), CNN ($1.04), The Weather Channel ($0.91), Fox News ($0.84), Lifetime ($0.80), USA ($0.77) and TBS ($0.76). Among midsized networks: National Geographic Channel ($0.51), Superstation WGN ($0.38), ESPN Classic ($0.37) and Hallmark Channel ($0.35).

• Quality rating of programming, four or five on a five-point scale: Discovery (79%), ESPN2 (79%), ESPN (78%), History (77%), TWC (75%), CNN (73%), Disney Channel (73%), HGTV (72%), Fox News (70%), Animal Planet (69%) and The Learning Channel (69%). For midsized networks: NGC (67%), Speed Channel (67%), ESPN Classic (63%), Hallmark (62%) and WE: Women’s Entertainment (62%).
