Baseball Owners to Pitch Network

8/20/2004 3:39 AM Eastern

As expected, Major League Baseball owners Thursday voted unanimously to give the green light to a 24-hour, digital-cable-based baseball network.

MLB executive vice president of business Tim Brosnan will head up the channel, which won't feature regular-season games but will include classic games and other programming from the league’s content library.

The network will also feature highlight packages and original programming, according to MLB executives, although the league would not release specific details.

The network will seek digital-cable distribution, but executives said it will entertain carriage on sports tiers.

MLB will join the National Football League (NFL Network), the National Basketball Association (NBA TV) and the National Hockey League (NHL Network) in offering dedicated, 24-hour networks.
