TWC Plugs VOD Into iPad TV App

Time Warner Cable released an update Tuesday for its TWC TV app for iPad tablets that offers access to more than 4,000 TV and movie video-on-demand titles from 91 providers, in addition to more than 300 live TV channels depending on video package and market.

The MSO plans to add the same capability to the TWC TV app for PC and Android devices, currently scheduled for sometime in the first quarter of 2013, TWC director of digital communications Jeff Simmermon wrote in a blog post announcing the update.

VOD content available includes episodes of primetime TV shows, such as Fox’s New Girl, NBC’s The Voice and AMC’s The Walking Dead.

“The initial catalog is a mix of HD and standard-def content,” Simmermon wrote. “We will be adding more stuff on a regular basis, and adding more HD as we are able.”

Other new features in the latest iPad app include a “recently viewed channels” button as well as performance enhancements and bug fixes, according to Simmermon.

To use the TWC TV apps, customers must have a standard cable TV package, and a Wi-Fi connection to an Internet connection of at least 1.5 Mbps or a TWC-provided video-only modem. The video content may be accessed only over an in-home Wi-Fi network.

Other cable operators that offer IPTV on tablets and smartphones include Cablevision Systems, which has offered access to VOD in addition to live TV since it debuted its iPad app in April 2011.
