HD Penetration Approaching 10%

Leichtman Research Group Inc. pegged HDTV penetration at 7% of all U.S. homes as of Sept. 30, nearly double the figure of one year ago.

LRG found that the average home income of an HD-set owner has dropped from $95,000 last year to $80,000 this year.

But the researcher still found plenty of consumer confusion about whether they are truly watching HD. Some 65% of HD-set owners reported that they are receiving HD programming from their cable or direct-broadcast satellite provider, but LRG said industry analysis shows that the true figure is one-half that amount.

"The majority of consumers in households with DTV sets are not actually watching HD programming, but they think that they are," LRG said.
