Cox Lights Up 750 Wi-Fi Hotspots In Northern Virginia

Service Available to Most Broadband Subs, But Not Yet to 'Cable WiFi' Partners 1/30/2013 11:45 AM Eastern

Cox Communications has deployed more than 750 Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Fairfax County, Va., to provide Internet access for most of its broadband subscribers in high-traffic areas for no additional charge, but initially the MSO won’t connect customers of other operators in the Cable WiFi program.

Subscribers to Cox's Preferred, Premier and Ultimate tiers will have free access to the Wi-Fi hotspots as part of their product bundles. Wi-Fi access is not available to subscribers on Cox's two entry-level broadband tiers, Economy/Starter (1 Mbps downstream) and Value (3 Mbps downstream).

Cox also has activated more than 700 hotspots across its Connecticut service areas.

Eventually, the Cox hotspots will be pooled into the Cable WiFi initiative, announced last summer by Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox, Cablevision Systems and Bright House Networks. Under that program, each of the MSOs is providing their respective broadband subs access to any of the operators’ Wi-Fi networks, with the goal of delivering more value to high-speed Internet customers who may be tempted to simply switch to 4G wireless services.

But Cox currently is not providing authenticated access to Cable WiFi partners. “We do plan to continuing working with other providers to be able to bring the service to others outside of our system,” Cox spokeswoman Emma Inman said. “At this point, this is a phased trail launch for Cox Wi-Fi.”

Once customers connect to Cox’s Wi-Fi network using a device, the same device will automatically connect for the next 30 days without customers having to re-enter their Cox credentials. In addition, customers can attach three devices per user ID and 10 per account at a time.

"Our customers want access to reliable and high speed internet wherever they are," J.D. Myers II, market vice president for Cox’s Northern Virginia operations. "Providing them Cox Wi-Fi service allows us to meet their changing information access needs, whether it's TV programming, social connections, home monitoring or simply general information that is secure and reliable from the four walls of their home to the four corners of their community."

Cox said its Wi-Fi hotspots offer download speeds of up to 15 Mbps and upload speeds of 4 Mbps.
