BCI Helps Shawnee Tornado VictimsCable Operator Sets Up Communications Café 5/23/2013 9:52 AM Eastern
Customers of BCI Broadband in Shawnee, Okla., were able to communicate with the outside world within hours after a tornado touched down on the small community on May 19.
While a smaller storm than the one that devastated the nearby town of Moore on May 20 – which caused about 24 deaths – the Shawnee tornado destroyed several sections of the city and resulted in one fatality.
According to BCI, the cable operator set up a communications café in the Red Cross Center in the local high school within four hours of the storm, providing Wi-Fi, local and long distance telephone service and a large screen TV to entertain displaced families. BCI said it will continue the service until it is no longer needed.
