BBC's Huggers To Head Intel Digital Home Group

Intel hired Erik Huggers, director of the BBC's Future Media & Technology division, as general manager of its Digital Home Group, which sells microprocessors for cable set-top boxes and consumer-electronics devices like "smart" TVs.

Huggers -- who replaces Brad Daniels, the interim general manager of the Digital Home Group -- also will become a member of Intel's Management Committee.

Huggers joined the BBC in 2007 and is responsible for delivering BBC content over the Internet, interactive TV and mobile. He is also responsible for managing the BBC's Broadcast and Enterprise Technology Group and BBC Archives, as well as leading the BBC's Research and Development activities.

Prior to joining the BBC, he was with Microsoft, where he led the global business development for Windows Media Technologies, and also worked at Endemol Entertainment as director of business development for its interactive division.

Intel's Digital Home Group offers products for use in consumer-electronics devices designed to access and share Internet, broadcast, optical media and personal content through a variety of linked digital devices within the home. Products in this group include the company's Atom processors and system-on-a-chip devices. Intel is a key partner in the Google TV initiative, which aims to combine Web and TV content as well as provide interactive apps and enhanced personalization.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel does not disclose the specific number of employees for individual business units, according to spokesman Tom Beermann.
