BBC World Comes Calling

9/27/2004 8:11 AM Eastern

Representatives of BBC World, the U.K. broadcaster’s news channel, met with officials of the top three U.S. cable companies and DirecTV Inc. seeking carriage, according to a published report.

The London-based Financial Times said Sunday that meetings in New York involved Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications Inc. officials, and DirecTV and British Broadcasting Corp. officials met in Los Angeles.

The BBC has been trying to launch the 24-hour news channel in the United States for more than two years, but it hasn’t found a distribution partner yet, the article said.

A Cox spokesman confirmed that a meeting took place as described but declined further comment.

Neither DirecTV nor Comcast would comment.

The article quoted an unnamed BBC director as being “cautiously optimistic” that a deal could be struck within months and that the channel could launch in the United States next year.
